Meghalaya faces rising HIV prevalence amidst low awareness

Guwahati: Meghalaya has reported an HIV prevalence of 0.42 percent among adults, surpassing the national average of 0.21 percent. According to a report in the Shillong times, the data was shared by Dr B Decruse, the Project Director of Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS), during the inaugural event of the Red Fest—The North East Multimedia Campaign (NEMMC) held at Lariti Centre for Performing Arts, Mawkasiang, New Shillong Township on Wednesday.

Dr Decruse conveyed that while many states and union territories across the country are witnessing a decreasing trend in HIV prevalence, the scenario is the opposite for states in the Northeastern region. She emphasised the alarming nature of the HIV scenario in Meghalaya and other Northeastern states.

According to the epidemiological significance of Northeastern states based on HIV epidemic behavior, Mizoram (2.34%), Nagaland (1.34%), and Manipur (0.94%) have some of the highest adult HIV prevalence rates, as per data from IBBS 2014-15 and estimations of 2022.

Highlighting the low awareness levels, Dr. Decruse mentioned that only 17 percent of males and 60 percent of females in Meghalaya are aware of HIV/AIDS. She expressed concern over the high level of discrimination faced by people living with HIV and stressed MACS’s commitment to increase awareness and sensitization campaigns across the state, spanning from villages to schools, colleges, and workplaces.

Dr Decruse underlined MACS’s efforts in promoting counseling and testing, linking individuals to treatment, and ensuring adherence to treatment. Despite these efforts, she acknowledged the persistent challenges posed by HIV/AIDS.

The North East Multimedia Campaign, organized under the theme ‘North East United Against HIV/AIDS,’ aims to raise awareness, empower communities, and support the issue of HIV/AIDS in the Northeastern region, particularly targeting youth and vulnerable populations. The campaign seeks to leverage local music talent, providing a platform to showcase their skills and spread positive messages.

NACO Deputy Director, Bhavana Rao, shared concerns over the alarming trend of HIV prevalence and incidence in Northeastern states, calling for collective action to combat the issue. She pointed out significant increases in new HIV infections in Meghalaya, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Commissioner and Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare department, Joram Beda, stressed the need for a multimedia campaign to create awareness. He acknowledged the achievements made so far but warned of wavering political commitment and declining funding, urging accelerated efforts to eliminate AIDS and amplify the impact of investments.

The event saw participation from key figures, including East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah and Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, Isawanda Laloo, highlighting the collaborative approach needed to address the rising challenge of HIV/AIDS in the region.
