Shillong: Less than two years since the inauguration of two five-star hotels – Taj Vivanta and Courtyard by Marriott in Meghalaya, the State Government has spent over Rs 2 crore to conduct various government programs in these establishments.
Responding to queries raised by legislator Banteidor Lyngdoh, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma disclosed that a total of 23 programs have been conducted in these luxurious hotels since their opening, incurring an expenditure of Rs 2,14,96,000.
Lyngdoh further questioned the necessity of holding these programs in such opulent venues when alternatives like Hotel Pinewood and the State Central Library are available.
In response, Sangma justified the decision by citing the need for proper comfort and services for delegates, particularly for significant events like the G20 summit, for which the Government spent approximately Rs 62 lakhs at the Courtyard by Marriott.
While acknowledging the availability of other facilities like the State Convention Centre and Hotel Pinewood, Sangma emphasised the importance of utilising five-star hotels for certain events.

During the question hour, Gambegre MLA Saleng Sangma raised concerns about promoting local entrepreneurs and hotels. However, Sangma reiterated the government’s stance, indicating plans for more five-star hotels due to the existing establishments’ limited capacity of only 300 rooms combined.
Furthermore, Sangma highlighted the government’s efforts in promoting approximately 500 homestays and earmarking funds under CM Connect for entrepreneurs to develop tourist villas, emphasising a multifaceted approach to tourism development in the region.
