Shillong: Unhappy with the MoU signed between Meghalaya and Assam governments to resolve the six areas of differences, headmen and leaders from various villages of Ri-Bhoi and Jirang were left disappointed after they were unable to meet the chief minister to apprise him of their concerns.

With gates closed on their faces, the leaders shared that they had expected to meet the chief minister but were sent away. They were also joined by Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) who had come forward to extend their support to the people from the border areas.

Speaking with mediapersons on Tuesday in front of the Secretariat gate in Shillong, Maikhuli headmen Kleden Sangma said they are hurt with this treatment and said that come what may, they will not be a part of Assam- be it through protest or knocking at the doors of the Supreme Court.

MPYC president Adrian Chyne Mylliem said that they have come out to protest against the decision taken by the government.

“We can see many people in the disputed areas have cried that whatever has happened is foul play and no consultation was carried out with the village heads or community to give away those areas …it is out right and it is necessary that we take a stand against this decision,” said Mylliem.
