Imphal: Hundreds of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) members staged a protest in front of Congress Bhavan in Imphal on Friday, demanding the resignation of Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual misconduct.
MP Bimol was recently dismissed from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi following allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students.
Holding placards, the protesters raised slogans demanding truth and justice. They also called for protecting the dignity of Manipur and punishing those found guilty.
Police personnel deployed at the site prevented protesters who attempted to enter the Congress Bhavan premises from proceeding further.
Criticising the BJYM protest, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) general secretary N. Popilal described the rally as “funny” and “unfortunate”.
He said it was unprecedented in Manipur’s history for a ruling party with 55 MLAs to demand justice from the Opposition Congress, which has only five MLAs.
Popilal asserted that the people of Manipur stood with Bimol Akoijam, adding that they were his strength. Expressing confidence that justice would be delivered soon, he said the Congress would be ready to raise slogans of victory when that day came.
