Earlier, Kakchingtabam also served as the president of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU), an apex media body of Manipur.

Imphal: In a major development, Bijoy Kakchingtabam, a senior journalist from Manipur currently working as an associate editor of Poknapham, has been nominated as a member of the Press Council of India (PCI). He is the second journalist from the state to represent the national media watchdog. 

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting nominated him under the “Working Journalists-Other than Editors” category vide notification S.O. 5494(E) on Wednesday. He is the lone journalist from Manipur among 13 working journalists nominated to the apex press regulatory body.

Earlier, Kakchingtabam also served as the president of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU), an apex media body of Manipur.

In a congratulatory message, AMWJU President Asem Bhakta Singh expressed heartfelt gratitude and immense proud for a senior colleague and termed the nomination as a historic moment for Manipur. 

According to Singh, the nomination of Kakchingtabam is the second Manipuri journalist to be nominated at the national media regulatory body. In the previous term, Dr Khaidem Athouba Meitei was nominated as an outside-state nominee, making him the first from Manipur, he said, while congratulating both for bringing laurels to the state.

Singh further stated that in these difficult times for Manipur, the state need a strong and independent voice at the national level. He also expressed confident that Kakchingtabam will be the voice for the media fraternity of Manipur and the Northeast region.
