Imphal: The eighth session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly commenced on Wednesday, with two Kuki-Zo legislators attending the House in person for the first time in more than three years.
Haokholet Kipgen, MLA from Saitu Assembly constituency, and Kimneo Haokip Hangshing, MLA from Saikul Assembly constituency, were physically present during the first sitting of the session.
Their attendance marks a significant departure after a gap of three and a half years, during which Kuki-Zo legislators had not physically participated in Assembly proceedings.
Speaking on his return to the Assembly, Kipgen said he was happy to be back after a long absence.
Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen attended the session virtually.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh welcomed the physical return of the Kuki-Zo legislators, describing it as a positive step towards fostering unity and peace in the state.
“This is a good sign from people’s representatives, and it is a welcome step,” Khemchand Singh said, adding that Manipur could move towards peace through collective efforts.
The chief minister attributed the development to the state government’s continued efforts to address the trust deficit among different communities.

Following the formation of the BJP-led government under Khemchand Singh on February 4, 2026, Kuki-Zo MLAs had participated in earlier Assembly sittings virtually.
Wednesday’s physical attendance marked their first return to the House in person in more than three years.
