Ukhrul: The counter-economic blockade and total shutdown imposed along National Highway 202 has been lifted following talks between the Manipur government and representatives of the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, on Tuesday.
Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas and MLA and State Government Spokesperson, Thokchom Radheshyam, chaired the closed door meeting with the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, at Shangkai village in Ukhrul district. The minister was accompanied by ruling legislators, including T Robindro, Sheikh Noorul Hassan, Paonam Brojen, K Robindro and L Rameshwar Meitei.
Following the talks and lifting of the counter-economic blockade on the Imphal-Ukhrul highway, over 450 trucks stranded for nearly a month have been moving toward Imphal.
The stranded truck drivers expressed their gratitude to the state government and the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, for the initiative and efforts to facilitate vehicle movement along NH-202.
The resumption of truck movement is expected to provide relief to drivers who had remained stranded for nearly a month and help restore the movement of essential goods in the state.
The counter-economic blockade, enforced from 27 July 2026 and intensified into a total shutdown from 5 August 2026, was imposed in response to the selective economic blockade targeting Kuki-Zos by certain Tangkhul and Meitei groups along NH-202.
In a statement, the Kuki CSO Working Committee Ukhrul stated that the decision to lift the measures follows the meeting at Shangkai, where the Government of Manipur delegation, led by Home Minister Govindas Konthoujamand MLA and Spokesperson, ThokchomRadhesh
Further, a handwritten agreement was executed between the WCKCSOs-Ukhrul and the Government delegates, whereby the latter undertook responsibility for ensuring the safety and security of NH-202 and preventing any blockade or disturbance by any group.
“In view of this development and the Government’s assurance of free and non-discriminatory movement of essential commodities, the WCKCSOs-Ukhrul hereby lifts the Counter Economic Blockade and Total Shutdown from 4:30 PM today,” it stated.
The WCKCSOs-Ukhrul further commended the Government’s intervention and expects the agreement to be implemented in letter and spirit, ensuring that no community is subjected to selective economic restrictions.
The WCKCSOs-Ukhrul stated that normal vehicle movement will resume with effective from 4:30 pm on Tuesday.
