Imphal: 2026 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Chanambam Rishikanta Singh and bronze medallist Sorokhaibam Bindyarani Devi received a warm reception upon their arrival at Imphal Airport on Monday.
Indian weightlifter Rishikanta Singh won the silver medal in the men’s 60 kg event, while Bindyarani, who competes in the newly transitioned women’s weightlifting 58 kg category, settled for bronze in the recently concluded Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
The two prominent weightlifters from Manipur were received by state officials, members of the All Manipur Weightlifting Association, family, friends and students from the National Sports Academy (NSA). MLA Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh was also present at the airport reception.
Speaking to media persons, silver medallist Rishikanta said he is delighted to win a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games despite coming from a small state like Manipur.
“I started my weightlifting journey from the National Sports Academy and after putting so much of efforts and hardwork, I could finally win this medal,” said the beaming silver medallist Rishikanta.
Describing his achievement as a dream come true, Rishikanta said he will train harder to improve his performances in the future events.
Bindyarani Devi expressed her gratitude to family, friends and well-wishers for the warm reception and urged the people of the state to continue to extend their support. She also gave credits to her parents, coaches and supporters to her international achievement.
Naorem Praveen Singh, Secretary cum Commissioner of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS), praised the two medallists for their remarkable performances at the recently concluded 2026 Commonwealth Games. He noted that their achievements underscored the significance of determination and perseverance in overcoming challenges.
Secretary cum Commissioner Praveen also spoke about the impressive showing of women from the state at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He emphasised that women from the state have played prominent roles across various fields and continue to excel in sports.
He also informed that weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and boxer M Jadumani Singh have been confirmed for participation in the upcoming Asian Games.
