Ukhrul: A youth from Sinakeithei village in Ukhrul district was reportedly shot by suspected armed miscreants from a bunker allegedly constructed at Lungter Hill on Wednesday.
According to the Sinakeithei Village Authority, at around 4 pm, a village youth identified as Chihanngam Rungsung, 30, sustained a bullet injury from a gunshot allegedly fired from a bunker on Lungter Hill overlooking the village.
The bullet pierced through his heel, leaving him injured and highlighting the severity of the threat faced by civilians.
The Village Authority stated that the victim was not in any advancing position but was simply moving within the village at the time of the incident.
He was reportedly given immediate medical attention by troops of the Border Security Force (BSF) before being evacuated to Ukhrul District Hospital for further treatment.
Expressing concern over the situation, the Village Authority said the incident demonstrates that even basic movement within one’s own village has become life-threatening, and that no civilian space can be considered safe under the present circumstances.
The authority further stated that the village has been under sustained and coordinated armed attack for over two months.
During this period, armed groups have continued their activities, progressively moving into multiple areas of the village and establishing bunkers, trenches and camps—particularly across the Lungter Hill range, which has emerged as a key strategic location.
Despite the deployment of the Army and other security forces in the area, along with regular patrols along the Lungter road, the Village Authority said the situation on the ground remains largely unchanged.
It alleged that armed groups continue to open fire indiscriminately and have, on several occasions, used explosives, creating an atmosphere of constant fear and instability for residents.
The authority added that villagers have largely taken a defensive stance, focusing on protecting their homes, land and community, rather than escalating the conflict.
However, it stated that this restraint has not prevented further encroachment, with bunkers and fortifications reportedly being constructed in full view of deployed security personnel, raising concerns among locals over the lack of intervention.
