Imphal: Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Manipur Police, recovered a large cache of explosives from the Jiribam–Tipaimukh Road in Manipur’s Pherzawl district on Thursday and arrested two persons, officials said.
The recovery was made during a mobile vehicle check post set up by Assam Rifles as part of heightened security measures ahead of Republic Day celebrations.
According to officials, a vehicle approaching the check post was found moving suspiciously. When security personnel signalled it to stop, the occupants abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
A joint team of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police chased the suspects and apprehended two individuals after a brief pursuit.
A search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of 30 gelatin sticks, 20 detonators, safety fuse, flexible wire, and approximately ₹1 lakh in cash. A Bolero vehicle used to transport the materials was also seized.
Security officials said the recovered items are commonly used in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The arrested individuals, along with the seized materials, have been handed over to the local police for further investigation and legal action.
Officials added that Assam Rifles is working in close coordination with the Manipur Police to maintain law and order in sensitive areas, particularly in districts bordering Assam.

Routine area domination, vehicle checks, and surveillance have been intensified to prevent the movement of illegal arms, explosives, and other contraband. Further investigation is underway to determine the source and intended destination of the explosives and to identify any possible links to a larger network.
No injuries were reported during the operation, officials said.
