Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced plans to build 7,000 temporary houses for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) currently residing in various schools and colleges.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Durbar Hall of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Wednesday, he stated that the Centre has approved the construction of these houses to accommodate people in relief camps across the state.
The district-wise allocation of houses includes Bishnupur (1,015), Chandel (511), Churachandpur (1,331), Imphal East (594), Imphal West (225), Kakching (1,217), Kamjong (74), Kangpokpi (1,813), and Tengnoupal (880).
Singh also mentioned that the funding from the PMAY scheme was insufficient to meet the construction costs. He has requested an additional Rs 4 lakh per house for about 2,500 homes in areas like Phubala (Moirang), Sericulture Farm, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi. He expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for sanctioning the funds.
Singh further thanked Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for resolving disputes related to National Highway projects in Manipur. The Centre has assured that land compensation disputes along National Highway-37 will be settled soon, allowing contractors to resume work in coordination with the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
The chief minister revealed that an additional Rs 1,000 crore for developmental projects in both hill and valley areas will be sanctioned soon. Concrete roads will be constructed in valley regions and within an 8-10 km radius of district headquarters in the hill districts, at an estimated cost of Rs 175 crore.
Out of the 117 proposals submitted by the state under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), 57 have been approved, with a total sanction of Rs 217 crore. Singh is hopeful that the remaining proposals will be cleared soon. Additionally, the Centre has assured Rs 170 crore in compensation for damage caused by Cyclone Remal.
The chief minister also praised Union Minister Kiren Rijiju for his efforts to develop a world-class football stadium in the state, with a project cost of around Rs 220 crore.
Ahead of Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba, Singh announced that Rs 1,000 will be distributed to individuals residing in relief camps as part of the fifth phase of financial assistance. He also confirmed that state government employees and pensioners will receive their October salaries and pensions before October 31, 2024.
