Imphal: Less than a month after severe flooding, several parts of Manipur, especially the valley areas, are again inundated following continuous downpour over the past few days.
According to an official report, most of the Imphal River has crossed the danger level, leading to the evacuation of over 2,000 people.
These residents have been moved to safer locations and relief camps, with no casualties reported in the Imphal area so far. However, in Senapati district, at least two individuals were swept away by floodwaters and mudslides caused by incessant rainfall.
In the Imphal area, several locations, including Singjamei and its surrounding localities, have been severely flooded after the embankment on the Imphal River at Singjamei Oinam Thingel breached on Tuesday evening. Locals reported that several homes near the breached site were almost entirely inundated. Many residents from Singjamei and Kakwa areas are now reportedly taking shelter in safe places such as roadsides, river embankments, and bridges.
Major rivers like Thoubal and Iril in Imphal are also flowing above the danger level, resulting in flooding in several parts of the Imphal valley.
Water Resources and Relief & Disaster Management Minister Awangbow Newmai stated that the state government’s first priority is to relocate the flood victims to safer places in the affected areas. He added that efforts are ongoing to prevent the overflow and breach of the Imphal River at various locations.
The minister also mentioned that 25 NDRF personnel from Kohima have reached Imphal, with an additional 20 NDRF personnel from Arunachal Pradesh and more NDRF teams and boats expected to arrive soon.

Minister Awangbow further attributed the severe flooding in Manipur to widespread deforestation, encroachment on riverbanks, and mass poppy plantation. He warned that if deforestation continues at the current rate of 420 sq.km annually, it would lead to a severe ecological imbalance within 10 to 15 years. He noted that the main causes of the flooding in Imphal are either due to overflow, seepage, or breach of the riverbanks.
