Imphal: Manipur witnessed tragic casualties as heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and hailstorms struck the region on Sunday, resulting in one fatality and injuries to two individuals.
Huidrom Nilakanta, 50, known as Ithoi Meitei, and his wife Huidrom Romila, 45, residents of Yangdong Awang Leikai in Kakching district, were struck by lightning while tending to their farm around 3 pm.
Despite being rushed to the nearest health center in Kakching, Nilakanta, whose left chest was charred due to the lightning, succumbed to his injuries. His wife Romila sustained severe injuries and has been referred to RIMS for further medical care.
Their residence suffered damage from the hailstorm, with parts blown away by strong winds.
In a separate incident, Lourembam Basanta Singh, 53, a resident of Lourembam Maning Leikai, Nambol in Bishnupur district, sustained injuries from a lightning strike while working in the field around 4 pm. Singh is currently receiving treatment at the Asian Hospital in Imphal.

Concerned about the prevailing weather conditions, authorities have taken preventive measures by ordering the closure of all schools and colleges for two days, starting Monday.
In response to the situation, Chief Minister N Biren Singh addressed the public via Facebook, stating, “All schools and colleges will remain closed on 6th May and 7th May 2024 due to the prevailing weather conditions in the state. The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure against the risks posed by the current weather conditions. I urge all to stay updated and remain safe indoors. The state government is taking all necessary measures to protect lives & properties and assist those who have been affected”.
