Kangpokpi: In a protest against the brutal killing of two Kuki-Zo volunteers, the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) has indefinitely locked the government offices in Kangpokpi district.
Various government offices, including the Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council, Zonal Education Office (ZEO), Town Employment Exchange, were forcibly closed following the government’s failure to take measures to nab the perpetrators after two Kuki-Zo volunteers were gruesomely killed at Phailengmol village, a fringe village bordering Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts, on Saturday.
According to COTU spokesperson Ng Lun Kipgen, government offices were indefinitely closed in the district headquarters in continuation of public protest. He said they also plan to close the office of the deputy commissioner/district election officer from Tuesday night if the government fails to deliver the dead bodies of the two Kuki-Zo volunteers.
“We have also appealed to the Chief Election Commission of India to take up the cases, so that the plights of the Kuki-Zo community would be solved,” said Kipgen.
The tribal leaders also held a crucial meeting with DC/DEO Mahesh Chaudhari to address the incident and submitted a charter of demands, which includes a judicial investigation into the Phailengmol incident and delivery of the bodies.
We spoke to our district election officer and he has assured us that he will take all necessary action and measures to solve the issue, added Kipgen.

It may be noted that massive protests were organised by Kuki-Zo people in Kangpokpi, Churachandpur and New Delhi on Sunday against the killing of its two members identified as Kammimlal Lupheng, 23, and Kamlengsat Lunkim, 22, during the gunfight at Phailengmol.
