Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced on Tuesday that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken charge of investigating the killing of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ch Anand Singh in Moreh. He revealed that four individuals allegedly involved in the incident have been apprehended.
During the final day of the 5th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, Congress MLA K Meghachandra Singh raised concerns regarding the incident. CM N Biren Singh condemned the killing, labeling it as a cowardly act and emphasised the government’s commitment to restoring normalcy in Moreh.
The late SDPO Anand, a resident of Haobam Marak area in Imphal West, was fatally shot by a sniper while overseeing the cleaning of a newly constructed helipad in Moreh on October 31 last year.
Replying to questions raised by MLA K Meghachandra Singh, chief minister N Biren Singh said in the House that CBI reported to have filed chargesheet against five accused persons in connection with the case of missing two students.
Replying to another question, the chief minister said that as per the Press Information Bureau, the MHA decided to scrap the Free Movement Regime between India and Myanmar to ensure the internal security of the country and to maintain the demographic structure of India’s North Eastern States Bordering Myanmar. The Ministry of External Affairs is currently in the process of scraping it and MHA has recommended the immediate suspension of the FMR.
Regarding rehabilitation efforts for violence-affected families, the Chief Minister stated that 50% advance compensation has been disbursed to 139 families under the Permanent Housing Scheme.

Another 50% for 472 families has been sanctioned. He assured the Assembly that compensation distribution will commence following property assessments conducted by Deputy Commissioners. As interim relief, families whose homes were destroyed or damaged will receive Rs 1 lakh compensation per family, with 25% already approved.
The Chief Minister’s responses came in reply to questions raised by MLA Th Lokeshwar, underscoring the government’s proactive measures towards ensuring justice and rehabilitation in the wake of unfortunate incidents.
