Imphal: Manipur’s Minister of Transport, Khashim Vashum, presided over a crucial meeting on Monday with representatives from the Senapati District Trucks Owners Association (SDTOA) and Senapati District Truck Drivers Union (SDTDU) at Senapati district headquarters.

Following the discussions, both associations have consented to withdraw the ongoing steering down agitation, effective from February 27.

The meeting, attended by MLA J Kamo Sha, Deputy Commissioner Senapati Mamoni Doley, ADM Senapati PP Ronald Pao, and Additional SP Senapati ML Kaisungbou, addressed key issues concerning truckers’ safety and security.

It was disclosed during the meeting that the State Police had apprehended an active member of the KYKL organization, RK Jitensana alias Nanao, 43 years old, from Imphal West’s Pangei Leiram Mapan near MPTC Gate.

Jitensana is suspected to be involved in the assault on truck drivers at Sekmai on February 16, 2024. Further investigation into the matter is underway.

To ensure the safety of trucks traversing National Highway 2, the government has committed to providing Route Opening Parties (ROP).

Additionally, the meeting addressed the issue of unauthorized taxation on sand collection, with the government pledging strict action against such illicit practices.

The steering down agitation was initially triggered by the assault on local truck drivers on February 16, 2024, at Sekmai around 10 pm. Since February 18, loaded trucks were barred from plying National Highway 2 due to the ensuing agitation.
