Imphal: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the brutal murder of Ngangom Nevy, a 17-year-old youth from Kakching district, has demanded the arrest of the culprits and capital punishment for their action.
Nevy, a native of Sugnu Awang Leikai, was presumed to have been killed after he went missing in May last year at the peak of Manipur violence. The victim’s family had filed a missing complaint at the Sugnu police station but to no avail. On June 28, the bereaved family, assuming the youth was dead had performed his last rites.
However, the search for Nevy was reinitiated on Wednesday after more than eight months of his disappearance following the circulation of a viral video on social media. The video depicted suspected militants decapitating his head. Upon identification of the location where the video was filmed, Manipur Police conducted a renewed search in Chandel, leading to the discovery of decomposed skeletal remains from Sokom village.
Addressing the press conference on Thursday, in addition to demands for ultimate punishments for the culprits, Chanthoi Aheibam, the convenor of JAC, has also sought justice for the victim’s family in the form of a government job.
“The inhumane act of slicing the throat of even the dead shows how they disrespected the mortal remains and we want the Kukis to be completely removed from the state,” said the JAC convenor.
The JAC also raised concerns about the proximity of the crime scene to the 37 Assam Rifles camp, which is said to be just 200 meters away and they are aware of the incident. Further, the JAC urged the removal of Assam Rifles from Sugnu.

The JAC has also given a seven-day ultimatum to the state government to meet their demands and asserted that they will not claim the mortal remains of Nevy until their demands are fulfilled.
