Imphal: The Manipur Human Rights Commission on Monday asked the state government to not proceed with the deportation of a Rohingya woman to Myanmar and said that such an action would be violation of the constitutional right to life.
A petition filed by Human Rights Alert (HRA) executive director Babloo Loitongbam stated that one Hashina Begam, a Rohingya refugee staying in India, is scheduled to be deported to Myanmar on March 22 (Tuesday) from Moreh in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district.
According to Loitongbam, the woman was reportedly picked up from the holding centre in Jammu at Kathuwa sub-jail by the government authorities on March 15, 2022. Her husband and three minor children are still living in the holding shelters in Jammu, it added.
“Considering the political turmoil that is going on inside Myanmar, the persecution that the Rohingya community suffers from the authority as well as the fact that the woman is separated from her immediate family, who are still in Jammu, it is highly unsafe for Hasina to be deported to Myanmar at this point in time,” said Loitongbam in a petition.
Khaidem Mani, the acting chairperson of the commission, said in an order that the complaint petition prima facie showed a violation of the right to life/personal liberty guaranteed by the Constitution of India read with Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the doctrine of non-refoulement.
The commission further directed the state government and police to file action taken reports by March 24.
