Police in Udalguri district have arrested former ULFA (I) member Bijay Asom, also known as Papu Koch, in connection with a case involving plans to form a new militant outfit. Asom, a resident of Dibrugarh, was arrested in Sonapur, Guwahati, on November 3.
The arrest follows the registration of a case earlier this year at Tangla police station, where authorities had received information about a group of youths attempting to form an organisation called the Revolutionary Front of Greater Assam. In the initial investigation, police arrested Rajiv Deka and recovered a grenade from his residence. Three others — Jumon Bora, Pinku Seal, and Jintu Baishya — were later detained.

Addressing the media on Friday, Udalguri Senior Superintendent of Police Padmanabh Baruah said that a re-investigation of the case revealed the alleged involvement of Asom, a former ULFA (I) cadre with a history of militancy. Acting on intelligence inputs, police arrested him in Guwahati on November 3.
Based on Asom’s confession, police carried out a search in the Dimachanga forest area under Lalpani outpost on Thursday night, where they recovered two live grenades, 55 rounds of live ammunition, and a detonator.
Police say further investigation is underway to determine if more individuals are involved in the suspected attempt to revive militant activity in the region.
