The Guwahati Gateway Terminal, the country’s first modern river terminal, will be inaugurated on November 7. Built on the banks of the Brahmaputra, the terminal is expected to improve passenger and cargo movement while boosting tourism in Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the inauguration on social media, saying that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will inaugurate the terminal along with the Guwahati riverfront.
The project was launched in May 2022 when the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone. Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 400 crore, the terminal will house all ferry and vessel operations handled by the Inland Water Transport department.

Officials have described the facility as the “waterway equivalent of an airport.” It features a 180-metre-long jetty designed to adapt to the Brahmaputra’s fluctuating water levels, enabling year-round access for passengers and vehicles.
The terminal is also expected to serve as a tourist destination, combining river transport with modern amenities and a developed riverfront. Authorities say it will improve connectivity and contribute to the state’s economic and cultural development.
The Guwahati Gateway Terminal is part of a larger push to expand sustainable transport infrastructure in Assam, centred on the Brahmaputra as a lifeline for the region.
