The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against two senior officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) in Bongaigaon and an architect from a private firm in connection with the death of assistant engineer Joshita Das.

According to the agency, the case was registered on October 13 following a directive from the Assam government dated August 11, 2025, and a subsequent notification from the Department of Personnel and Training, Government of India, issued on October 7. The case, originally filed at Bongaigaon Police Station (Case No. 188/2025), was handed over to the CBI for further investigation.

Preliminary allegations suggest that Das was subjected to “undue and illegitimate” pressure by her seniors and associates, including the accused architect, the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), and the Executive Engineer of PWD Bongaigaon. The pressure was reportedly related to a mini stadium project handled by the department.

It is alleged that Das faced coercion, threats, and intimidation to prepare and approve project estimates and bills in an irregular manner. The sustained harassment is believed to have pushed her to take her own life.

The CBI has not disclosed further details at this stage, stating that the investigation is ongoing.
