Guwahati: A hidden chapter in India’s natural history has unravelled with the discovery of a new genus of jumping spiders from the forests of Northeast India. The genus, Gratianna, described by Dr. John Caleb T.D. of Saveetha Medical College, University, Chennai, has been formally published in the international journal Peckhamia.

Jumping spiders (family Salticidae) are well known for their keen eyesight, vivid courtship displays, and charismatic behaviour.

They are among the most studied spiders globally, yet the forests of India and neighbouring regions continue to yield surprising new discoveries. The new genus Gratianna highlights this richness, bringing together three species that were previously placed in other genera but did not quite fit their definitions.

The type species, Gratianna assam (Caleb, 2020), was originally described in the year 2020 from Assam, India, and later recorded from Nepal in 2021. In the current study, the female of this species has been described for the first time, based on specimens collected near the Bherjan-Borjan-Padumoni Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam. Until now, only the male spider had been known to science. This discovery allows for a more complete understanding of the species’ morphology and its placement within the broader spider family tree.

In addition to G. assam, two Chinese species, Gratianna bowu (Lin, Wang & Ruan, 2024) and Gratianna yunnanensis (Song, 1991), have been reassigned to the genus. Careful comparison of male palps and female reproductive structures revealed distinct characteristics not consistent with their earlier placements in Carrhotus or Orientattus. These include needle-like emboli in males and slit-like copulatory openings in females, traits that align them more closely with other members of the tribe Plexippini.

Ecologically, Gratianna appears to be a forest specialist, inhabiting humid tropical and subtropical evergreen habitats, ranging from the lush rainforests of Assam to the subtropical forests of China. Their restricted habitat preferences underline the importance of conserving forest ecosystems, which are increasingly under pressure from human activity.

Dr. Caleb explained that the genus name Gratianna is derived from the Latin word gratia, meaning “grace,” and is dedicated to his daughter, Joanna Gratia. The discovery adds not just scientific value but also a personal connection, reminding us that taxonomic work often bridges both professional dedication and personal meaning.

“This finding refines spider classification and underscores the need to protect biodiversity hotspots like Northeast India,” Dr. Caleb said. “Such discoveries show us how much more remains hidden in our forests.”

With the establishment of Gratianna, India’s contribution to global spider taxonomy grows further to 114 genera and 329 species, underscoring Northeast India’s role as a biodiversity hotspot that continues to reveal species new to science.
