Aizawl: The Mizoram Chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) on Tuesday announced the discovery of skeletal remains believed to be over 700 years old in Khawlek village in Saitual district.
The announcement was made during a press interaction at the Aizawl Press Club, where INTACH Mizoram convener Rin Sanga, IAS (retd), shared details of the archaeological find.
According to Rin Sanga, the skeletal remains were discovered on January 11, 2025, by Laltlanhlua, a resident of Khawlek village, along a cliffside between Vanbawng and North Khawlek. The remains include nine human skulls and other skeletal fragments, believed to belong to early inhabitants of the region.
To verify the findings, Archaeologist Vanlalhuma Singson from the Art and Culture Department and Assistant Professor from HATIM, Lunglei, visited the site on May 2, 2025. The experts conducted an on-site assessment and confirmed the authenticity of the remains.
Following this, samples were collected and sent for Carbon-14 dating to Beta Analytic, a leading radiocarbon dating laboratory in Miami, Florida, USA. The test results confirmed that the remains date back to approximately 1250 AD to 1320 AD, placing them at over 700 years old.
