Shillong: The lone Congress MLA in Meghalaya, Ronnie V Lyngdoh, joined the National People’s Party (NPP) on Wednesday, leaving the Congress with zero MLAs in the state. The party now retains only one Member of Parliament from Meghalaya.
In the 2023 Assembly elections, the Congress had secured five seats. However, Saleng Sangma later vacated his MLA post after winning the MP seat, and three other Congress MLAs—Dr Celestine Lyngdoh, Charles Marngar, and Gabriel Wahlang—joined the NPP last year. This had left Ronnie V Lyngdoh as the last remaining Congress legislator in the state.
With today’s political development, the Congress no longer has any MLAs in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Lyngdoh submitted his resignation letter to the Speaker in his office, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and other members of the NPP.
NPP leader Wailadmiki Shylla also confirmed the development, stating that Ronnie V Lyngdoh has officially joined the party.
