Netflix’s adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia is scheduled to begin production in July, with filmmaker Greta Gerwig set to direct. The project will be based on The Magician’s Nephew, the sixth novel in C.S. Lewis’s fantasy series.
Unlike previous adaptations, the upcoming film will not be released theatrically in full but will stream on Netflix. A limited two-week IMAX run is planned before the online release.
In a recent interview with Deadline, producer Mark Johnson, who worked on the original Narnia trilogy, said he was unsure of the direction of the new adaptation. Johnson stated that while he is interested in the project and follows Gerwig’s work, he does not yet know which parts of the source material will be adapted or how the film will differ from earlier versions. He added that he expects the new adaptation to take a different approach.
Reports indicate that Emma Mackey, known for her role in Sex Education, has been offered the role of the White Witch. Earlier rumours had linked pop artist Charli XCX to the same role. Additional cast members include Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep, who will play Digory’s mother, uncle, and the voice of Aslan, respectively.
The Magician’s Nephew explores the origins of Narnia and features the White Witch in a central role. The story predates The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in the book chronology.
