Manipur: President’s Rule revoked, paving way for formation of popular govt

Guwahati: President Droupadi Murmu has imposed President’s Rule in Manipur on Thursday following a report from the state’s Governor, citing an inability of the state government to function in accordance with constitutional provisions.

The decision was notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs through an official proclamation, invoking Article 356 of the Indian Constitution.

As per the proclamation, the President has assumed all functions of the Manipur government and legislative powers, which will now be exercised under the authority of Parliament.

The proclamation also suspends several constitutional provisions related to the functioning of the state legislature and executive. Further, the President has authorised the Governor of Manipur to act on her behalf to the extent deemed necessary.

This marks a significant political development in the state, which has witnessed growing turmoil since May 3, 2023.
