This is Lamka is uniting over a hundred artists, designers, content creators, and dreamers from Lamka for Lengkhawm, a contemporary art exhibition set to be held at the India International Centre (IIC) in New Delhi from 11th to 22nd July 2024. This event aims to showcase the history, culture, and creativity of Lamka, a town in North-eastern India known for its tribal sub-groups.
The exhibition seeks to move beyond stereotypical portrayals of tribal communities as either victims or mere motifs. Through a process of careful selection and curation, the organisers aim to challenge the flawed understanding of hill tribes often perpetuated in mainstream media. Instead, they plan to present a powerful reminder of a collective identity through Lamka’s contemporary art-scapes, including photography, archival materials, audio-visual content, digital art, painting, reels, and poetry.
To bring this ambitious project to fruition, the organisers are seeking financial support. Hosting a successful exhibition at one of India’s foremost galleries involves significant operational costs, and contributions are welcome. This is Lamka is an art and cultural collective of over 100 artists, designers, and writers from Lamka. It began as a unique grassroots, community-driven digital archiving project to preserve the visual histories of the people of Lamka and beyond. In 2021, it culminated in a highly successful exhibition supported by the British Council’s prestigious Heritage Grant for South Asia. Since then, This is Lamka has grown organically, reaching other towns and cities in North East India, including the Legacy Thread’s exhibition by the North East India AV Archive.
