Senior kills junior to force school into declaring holiday

Agartala: In a shocking incident, a woman was strangled to death by her husband at Jaruilangbari, a nondescript village in the Khowai district of Tripura. Both of them were in an inebriated condition at the time of the incident.

The accused confessed his crime before the police after locals of the area mounted pressure on him. He said he had killed his wife because she used to drink excessive alcohol ignoring her household chores. The accused is now admitted to Teliamura Hospital.

Local sources said he was beaten black and blue by his neighbours after they could sense that he was responsible for the death of his husband. The accused is identified as Surjya Ram Reang while the deceased was identified as Shanti Rani Debbarma (35).

“She used to disobey my instructions at home. Round the day, she used to drink alcohol instead of focusing on household chores. She even avoided cooking, something that used to drive me angry. On the day of incident also, she didn’t cook for me in the night,” the accused told media persons adding that which was why he lost his temper and killed her.

Earlier, Tripura Police on Thursday night recovered the mortal remains of the middle-aged woman lying half-naked in an isolated spot barely a few yards away from her residence.

The accused informed the police that the deceased ventured out of her home in an inebriated condition after a quarrel broke out between them. The couple was drinking together in their home, said the police. A day after she went missing her body was found.

Speaking on the issue, a police officer said, “We have received information from our rapid response team that a dead body was found in this area, and accordingly, a team arrived at the spot for verification. The body will now be shifted to Teliamura Hospital’s morgue for a post-mortem examination. Once the post-mortem is conducted, we can be sure about the cause of death.”

According to the police, the woman left her home under the influence of alcohol. “She was drinking with her husband. Due to some reasons, she left home and didn’t return. As we have been informed, her husband also took no initiative to look for her as he was also heavily drunk,” said the police officer based on prima facie evidence.

Meanwhile, the accused Surjya Ram Reang in his initial statement told media persons that her body was lying in a semi-nude condition. He covered her body with a piece of cloth after the body drew public notice in the area.

“There were no clothes in the bottom portion of the body. As soon as I saw that, I brought a piece of cloth and covered her,” he added.

According to Reang, the lady had three children. Two out of her first marriages and with him.
