Veteran Guwahati musician Sumon Kalyan Dutta passes away at 59

Veteran Guwahati musician Sumon Kalyan Dutta passed away at his residence on Friday morning. He was 59.

A well-known and respected figure in Guwahati’s rock and roll fraternity, Dutta remained a familiar presence in the city’s live music circuit for decades.

He began his musical journey with the band Crystal Palace before going on to perform with Moonwind. He later fronted his own band, SKD. Dutta was also a member of the original line-up of the iconic band Friends, contributing to Guwahati’s rock music scene during its formative years.

Known for his passion for live performances and his long-standing commitment to the local music scene, Sumon Kalyan Dutta inspired generations of musicians and continued to be actively involved in live gigs across the city until recent years.

His passing marks the end of an era for Guwahati’s rock community. He is survived by his family, friends and countless admirers whose lives he touched through music.
