IIT Guwahati launches M.Tech programme in Robotics & AI

Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has launched a new M.Tech degree programme in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, aimed at both fresh graduates and working professionals seeking to upskill in AI-driven robotics systems.

Offered by the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Sustainability, the programme will be conducted in hybrid mode, combining online classes with on-campus laboratory sessions and final examinations at the institute.

The application portal for the inaugural batch is now open, with the deadline set for July 15, 2026. Classes are scheduled to commence from August 10, 2026.

One of the key highlights of the programme is that applicants are not required to have a GATE score. Selection will instead be based on a written test and/or interview conducted by the institute.

Speaking on the initiative, Prof. Hemant B. Kaushik, Dean of Outreach Education and Skilling, said the programme is designed to address the growing demand for expertise in intelligent systems. “It offers cutting-edge, interdisciplinary learning in machine learning, computer vision, and robotics through a flexible format, with a strong focus on real-world applications,” he said.

The programme integrates core areas of robotics, artificial intelligence, and automation, with applications across sectors such as agriculture, defence, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and smart infrastructure.

Designed with flexibility in mind, it features a multi-entry and multi-exit structure. Students can earn a postgraduate certificate after completing core courses, a postgraduate diploma after core and elective courses, and a Master of Science (Engineering) degree upon completion of coursework and a capstone project. The full M.Tech degree is awarded after completing all courses and project requirements.

The minimum duration of the programme is two years, extendable up to five years, allowing learners to balance academic and professional commitments. There is no age restriction for applicants.

All classes will be conducted online and recorded for flexible learning, while final examinations will take place on campus. Students will also have opportunities to visit the IIT Guwahati campus for hands-on training, interaction with experts, and project guidance.

To be eligible, candidates must hold a four- or five-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in relevant disciplines such as engineering, IT, or design, or a master’s degree in a related field, with at least 60% marks. Applicants must also have studied Mathematics up to Class 12 level.

The programme also includes opportunities to work on real-world industry problems, enabling students to gain practical experience and develop problem-solving skills.
