The JD Institute of Fashion Technology marked the 20th edition of its Annual Design Awards on Friday, bringing together students from its fashion, interior and jewellery departments for a showcase of design work at City Centre, Guwahati. Around 70 students participated in the event, which featured an interior display, a jewellery exhibition and a fashion show.
The institute, which completed two decades in Guwahati this year, said the awards continue to serve as a platform for students to present their work before industry professionals. Established in 2005, the institute provides training in design fields with an emphasis on industry exposure and project-based learning.
This year’s theme, “Last Invention”, encouraged students to imagine a future shaped by a single transformative innovation. Participants were asked to interpret the idea through sustainable and forward-looking design concepts.
The jury included architect Ritul Sharma, Managing Director Rupal Dalal, Director Harsh Dalal and the centre directors. Sharma commended interior design students for their use of natural materials, including acoustic panels made from mushroom-based components and lamps using lemongrass. Dalal highlighted collections from the fashion and jewellery streams, noting experiments with fabric infused with natural fragrances. Harsh Dalal pointed to a jewellery line crafted from broken tiles as an example of reusing discarded materials.

Centre directors Sumita Dey Deka and Ushmita Dey Hazarika congratulated the participants for their work, saying the designs reflected the creativity and technical skill of the students.
Awards were presented in several categories. The Best Design Award in fashion went to the collection “The Earth Bound Essence” by Harshita Das and Dipshika Bharali of the B.Voc Fashion Design programme. Another Best Design Award was given to Riter Doke for the collection “Mighty Architectonic” under the advanced diploma in fashion design. In the interior category, the Best Design Award went to Sushilia Sonam for the project titled “Eco Aura”.
The event closed with remarks from institute representatives, who said the showcase was intended to highlight emerging talent and reinforce the institute’s focus on developing design skills in the region.
