Dibrugarh: Assam’s flood death toll rose to 80 on Thursday after two more people died, while the number of affected people fell to over 2.12 lakh across eight districts.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said the flood situation improved from Wednesday, when more than three lakh people were affected.
According to the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS), the flood situation has improved considerably, with the number of affected districts coming down to eight.
A total of 2,12,441 people in 437 villages under 21 revenue circles continue to remain affected. The affected districts are Golaghat, Sivasagar, Biswanath, Charaideo, Kamrup (Metro), Jorhat, Dhemaji and Nagaon.
The report states that 17,198.09 hectares of crop area remain submerged. Charaideo is the worst-affected district with 77,456 people impacted, followed by Sivasagar with 71,232, Jorhat with 39,447 and Golaghat with 24,306.
Relief operations are continuing across the affected areas. A total of 112 relief camps and relief distribution centres are operational, with 13,294 people taking shelter in relief camps and another 62,289 people receiving assistance through relief distribution centres.
The report also noted that the Dhansiri (South) river at Numaligarh was flowing above the danger level, while no river was flowing above the highest flood level.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced a comprehensive financial relief package for families affected by the recent floods in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat and Jorhat districts.
Under the package, the state government has announced a six-month moratorium on loan repayments for affected borrowers across multiple loan categories. The relief covers housing, education and vehicle loans, crop loans, Self-Help Group (SHG) loans, fisheries, poultry, piggery and dairy loans, as well as loans availed by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Following the moratorium period, borrowers will also be given an extension in the repayment tenure.
The repayment period for housing, education and vehicle loans may be extended by up to one year, while crop, SHG, fisheries, poultry, piggery and dairy loans may be extended by one to two years. The repayment tenure for MSME loans may be be extended from three years to seven years.
The Chief Minister also announced a collateral-free consumption loan of ₹10,000 for existing borrowers in the affected districts to help meet immediate household expenses.
In addition, the government has sanctioned ₹1.5 lakh each for the repair of damaged namghars in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts.
The measures are aimed at providing immediate financial relief and supporting the recovery of families and businesses affected by the recent floods.
