Guwahati-based educator honoured with National Maths Special Achievement Award

Bringing accolades to the entire state, Guwahati-based mathematics educator Dinesh Lahoti has been honoured with the National Maths Special Achievement Award 2025, recognising his long-standing contribution to transforming mathematics education in India. The award honours his efforts to make the subject more engaging, inclusive, and conceptually meaningful for students from diverse social and academic backgrounds.

The national award ceremony was recently held at Science City and was organised by the All India Ramanujan Maths Club in association with the Gujarat Council of Science and Technology. Educators and academicians from across the country attended the event, celebrating innovative practices and impactful work in the field of mathematics education.

This special honour marks over 15 years of Lahoti’s sustained engagement in reimagining how mathematics is taught and learned.

“In a place like Assam, there was a time when mathematics as a subject was often associated with fear. Over the years, I have worked consistently to shift the focus towards understanding, curiosity, and hands-on application,” Lahoti said. “With time, the initiatives have touched thousands of students and teachers, particularly in Assam, while also reaching educational communities in other parts of India.”

Reacting to the recognition, Lahoti described the award as a shared achievement rather than an individual milestone. “This recognition carries my name, but it belongs to every student, teacher, parent, and collaborator who believed that mathematics can be learned with joy and understanding,” he added.

In 2012, Lahoti founded Edugenie with the vision of transforming classroom mathematics into an interactive and enjoyable experience. Through Edugenie, he introduced innovative approaches such as hands-on activities, puzzles, visual demonstrations, and real-life connections to mathematical concepts. Over the years, the platform has organised WOW Maths Shows, Community Maths Festivals, Puzzlothons, and structured teacher development programmes aimed at strengthening conceptual clarity while reducing anxiety around the subject.

Speaking about Lahoti’s initiative, Class IX student Subhamoy Goswami said, “I joined Edugenie three years ago. Earlier, maths was the subject I feared the most. However, after attending the sessions, I started enjoying solving problems. Lahoti sir’s innovative techniques finally helped me understand the ‘why’ behind the formulas.”

Educators associated with Lahoti also noted that such initiatives not only improve students’ foundational understanding but also empower teachers with creative tools and encourage exploration and discussion rather than memorisation.

The National Maths Special Achievement Award is presented annually to educators who have made significant contributions to promoting mathematical thinking and innovation in teaching and learning practices. The award serves as an inspiration for teachers and institutions to continue experimenting with new methods, reaffirming that mathematics, when taught creatively, can become a subject of joy rather than fear.
