The recent recognition of Charaideo Maidam as a UNESCO World Heritage Site has sparked worldwide interest in Assam’s rich cultural and historical heritage. During a visit to the site, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighted the monumental significance of this achievement, which places the Ahom dynasty’s legacy on the global stage.
Speaking at the site, Sonowal emphasised that Charaideo Maidam represents the architectural brilliance and cultural depth of the Ahom era, serving as a testament to the indomitable courage and governance of Assam’s ancestors. He extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his pivotal role in securing this recognition, calling it a “long-overdue honour” for Assam.
Tracing the origins of the Ahom dynasty, Sonowal noted the visionary leadership of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha, who united diverse communities under the policy of Saat Raj Saamari Ek Raj (seven kingdoms into one) in the 13th century. He likened this inclusive governance model to the Prime Minister’s Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas vision, which fosters national unity and empowerment.
“Charaideo Maidam embodies the bravery and pride of our ancestors and brings their timeless ideals to the global stage,” Sonowal stated. He also invited international travellers to experience the architectural and cultural brilliance of the Ahom period, along with the vibrant socio-cultural fabric that defines Assamese identity.
The journey towards UNESCO recognition began during Sonowal’s tenure as Assam’s Chief Minister. In 2020, during the Me-Dam-Me-Phi celebrations, Sonowal urged the Prime Minister to elevate Charaideo’s heritage status. His administration allocated substantial funding for the site’s development, including ₹25 crore in 2018 for the nomination process.
A high-level committee of historians, archaeologists, and cultural experts, led by former ASI Director General Dr K.C. Nauriyal, prepared a comprehensive dossier for submission to UNESCO. Sonowal continued to champion the cause as a Union Cabinet Minister, ensuring the dossier’s timely submission and advocating for the site at the highest levels of government.
