Boko: A tragic and mysterious incident unfolded at the Observation Home in Bongaon, under Boko Police Station, on Wednesday, as a 13-year-old boy died just hours after meeting his parents.
The teen, who was reportedly brought to the observation home on November 8 by Paltan Bazar Police for alleged involvement in theft under the influence of drugs, had been in the facility for less than two weeks.
According to his parents, they visited their son earlier in the day but were called back within an hour by the Observation Home staff, who informed them that the boy had been admitted to Bamunigaon Model Hospital. Upon reaching the hospital, the parents were informed of their son’s death.
“We don’t know the reason for our son’s death; even the doctors have not explained anything to us,” said the distraught parents.
Boko Police have launched an investigation into the matter. Boko Police Officer-in-Charge Phanindra Nath revealed that the Observation Home staff claimed the boy had been unwell for some time. “He was admitted to GMCH (Guwahati Medical College and Hospital) a few days ago, where he spent one night before being discharged. Today, he was again unwell and admitted to Bamunigaon Model Hospital,” Nath said.
The teen’s body will be sent to GMCH for postmortem to determine the cause of death.
The Observation Home, established in 2006-07 by the Assam Government’s Social Welfare Department under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000, is now under scrutiny following the incident. Further updates are awaited as police continue their investigation.
