Tezpur University’s Department of Education observed National Education Day today, commemorating the legacy of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first Education Minister. The event included a series of discussions, presentations, and cultural performances, reflecting on Azad’s vision for education and its evolving role in modern society.
The event’s focal point was a lecture by Prof. C.B. Sharma, Former Chairperson of the National Institute of Open Schooling and current Professor of Education at IGNOU’s School of Education. Prof. Sharma delivered a keynote address on “The Idea of a University in the Digital Age,” where he emphasised the critical role of universities as both guardians of knowledge and sources of innovation. He spoke on the long-standing tensions between academic institutions and authority, noting that universities, as centres for questioning established norms, are often viewed with suspicion by those in power. “Great institutions are not simply structures of brick and mortar; they are built on the foundations of brilliant minds and dedicated teachers who inspire and nurture future generations,” said Prof. Sharma.
Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. R.R. Hoque addressed the audience, underlining the role of education as the bedrock of progress. He spoke on the importance of maintaining academic integrity, highlighting plagiarism as an issue that threatens the credibility of research. Prof. Hoque advocated for a flexible curriculum that encourages creativity and critical thinking, supporting a more dynamic approach to learning.

Prof. Danta advised students and educators alike to embrace a mindset of continuous development rather than relying on shortcuts in education.
Prof. Kailash Chandra Biswal, Registrar of Tezpur University, spoke on the significance of empowering educators to guide the minds of future generations, thus contributing to social advancement. He emphasised the role of teachers not only as knowledge transmitters but also as mentors who shape students’ outlooks and capabilities.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Sashapra Chakrawarty, Head of the Department of Education, along with Dr. Mohammad Asif and Dr. Antara Dey, who expressed gratitude to all participants and staff involved in the programme.
