Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighted India’s advancing role as a global education leader and celebrated local academic legacies at the 78th Foundation Day of Assam Medical College and the 62nd Foundation Day of Dibru College in Dibrugarh, Assam, on November 3. The events marked an opportunity for Sonowal to engage with students and underscore the Modi government’s initiatives to transform the education sector, putting India on a path to becoming a “Viswa Guru” (world leader in knowledge).
At Assam Medical College (AMC), Sonowal spoke about the essential role doctors play in shaping a scientifically engaged society. Praising the legacy of AMC, he expressed confidence in the new generation of doctors carrying forward this mission to serve both the physical and mental health of people. He lauded India’s healthcare community, particularly its resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The prowess of India’s doctors and scientists proved invaluable in countering the pandemic. While the vaccine brought physical healing, the selfless service by doctors healed communities,” Sonowal said. He further pointed to India’s success in medical tourism, attributing this to the high standards of Indian medical professionals and the integration of traditional practices like yoga with modern medicine under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. Sonowal committed to expanding AMC’s capacity, acknowledging the Assam government’s ₹300 crore funding for infrastructure and promising additional support to elevate the college as a centre of excellence in the Northeast.
The AMC celebration saw participation from notable dignitaries, including Assam Minister Bimal Borah, Rajya Sabha MP Rameswar Teli, Sadiya MLA Bolin Chetia, Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation Mayor Dr Saikat Patra, and AMC Principal Prof. Sanjeev Kakati, among others. The presence of local leaders and healthcare officials underscored AMC’s role as a pillar of the community and a source of pride for the region.

Sonowal then joined the 62nd Foundation Day event at Dibru College, a leading institution in the region recognised by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). After paying tribute to the college’s founding leaders, Sonowal urged students to embrace the competitive spirit of the 21st century and prepare themselves for success through discipline and hard work. He encouraged them to look up to Prime Minister Modi, whom he described as a tireless role model dedicated to the nation’s service. “My appeal to students is to focus on building yourselves, as there is no shortcut to success. Our dynamic PM, Shri Narendra Modi ji, is a testament to this—an embodiment of service to the country,” he told the audience.
The Dibru College event was also attended by dignitaries, including former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, Dibrugarh University Vice Chancellor Prof. Jiten Hazarika, Dibru College Governing Council President Pradeep Kumar Baruah, and college Principal Aditi Baruah. Sonowal’s message resonated with the local community, which has long supported Dibru College as a beacon of learning and progress in Assam.
