Guwahati, Nov 3: Researchers from Assam have developed a unique, eco-friendly method to dye silk fabrics using natural tea compounds, creating a sustainable dyeing process with added health benefits. By utilizing catechin and gallic acid—two antioxidants present in tea leaves—the team created a dye that not only colors silk beautifully but also provides UV protection and antioxidant properties.
This study was conducted at Nowgong College (Autonomous) by researcher Shristirupa Borah, under the supervision of Dr. Parikshit Gogoi, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, with support from Dr. Rinku Moni Kalita and Dr. Swapnali Hazarika. The research findings have been published in Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, a journal of the American Chemical Society.
Catechin and gallic acid, which are rich in green tea and other tea types, offer significant dyeing potential. The study successfully used these compounds to create polymerized dyes with minimal waste, releasing only water as a byproduct. This environmentally friendly method presents a notable advancement in reducing pollutants and energy usage in the textile industry.
Dyeing experiments revealed that the ideal results were obtained by maintaining a bath temperature of 50 °C and a slightly acidic pH level of 5. When silk was dyed with these tea-based compounds, it displayed excellent color retention, especially when treated with alum, a natural mordant that enhanced durability.
Along with aesthetic improvements, tea compounds impart inherent UV-blocking and antioxidant benefits to the fabric, making it appealing to health-conscious consumers seeking wearable sun protection. With an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) reaching 57, tea-dyed silk shows strong potential for sun-protective clothing, particularly useful in sunny climates.
“Traditional synthetic dyes can harm the environment, but this tea-based method is cleaner, producing only water as a byproduct and reducing waste. The process works best at a mild temperature of 50°C and a slightly acidic pH. When alum is used, the dye’s color becomes even more durable,” the researchers associated with the study explained.
“The antioxidant properties of catechin and gallic acid further enhance these fabrics by promoting skincare benefits when worn, potentially soothing the skin and acting as a barrier to harmful free radicals. By integrating these tea-based compounds, the study brings new possibilities for natural wellness-focused textiles. This research not only highlights the potential of tea’s natural compounds in fabric dyeing but also reimagines tea as a sustainable ingredient in fashion and functional fabrics,” the research team added.
According to the researchers, the dyed silk not only retains its color effectively but also blocks UV rays, making it ideal for sun-protective clothing. Additionally, the tea compounds in the fabric may provide skin benefits by shielding against harmful free radicals.
“This innovative work by Assam researchers shows that tea can be used in sustainable, wellness-focused textiles, bringing a fresh perspective on natural fabric dyeing,” the researchers emphasized.
This development offers promising opportunities for the textile industry, where natural dye alternatives are increasingly sought after for environmental and health reasons.
