Guwahati: Assam Chief Secretary Dr Ravi Kota has issued a stern warning to contractors involved in the ongoing flyover projects across Guwahati, cautioning them of penalties if service lanes are not maintained.
The directive came during a review meeting held on Sunday, which was attended by officials from the Guwahati Commissioner’s office, PWD (Roads), Kamrup (Metro) district administration, Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), and other key departments.
During the meeting, Dr Kota instructed the Public Works Department (PWD) to closely monitor the service lanes at flyover construction sites for the next four days. Emphasising the importance of keeping these lanes functional, he warned that any failure to maintain them would result in penalties under existing regulations.
The Chief Secretary specifically highlighted the need for ongoing construction works at the elevated corridor from Guwahati Club to Bamunimaidam, Cycle Factory junction, and Downtown Hospital area to remain dust-free. Additionally, he directed PWD to ensure service lanes are free of potholes, properly illuminated, and allow for smooth traffic flow.
He directed that all necessary works must be completed by October 9, with a permanent team of engineers assigned to supervise the activities. Kota informed that potholes, including those in the Ulubari flyover area, must be repaired immediately, and paver blocks be provided if needed.
To enhance road safety, he also mandated Guwahati Utilities Company Limited (GUCL) and Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL) to identify dark spots along key roads and install adequate lighting.
Kota also revealed that the installation of 100 CCTVs equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) and facial recognition technology along the GS Road is underway. He urged the Guwahati Jal Board, Water Board, and GMC to ensure uninterrupted services, address water leakages, deploy additional manpower for road repairs, and maintain cleanliness at Puja pandals and ghats ahead of the festive season.
