Tinsukia: Police in Tinsukia arrested a 46-year-old man on Friday night for allegedly assaulting a 5-year-old girl in the Sripuria locality. The accused, identified as Jun Haloi, runs a temporary fish shop and lured the girl under the pretense of giving her chocolate.
The incident came to light after the child narrated her ordeal to her mother, sparking concern amid ongoing outrage over child safety in Assam, following a recent gang-rape case in Nagaon.
Tinsukia Police Superintendent Abhijit Gurav confirmed the arrest, stating that after a complaint was lodged, a police team raided the accused’s shop, but he had fled. “We tracked him to Panitola, around 11 km west of Tinsukia, and arrested him that night,” Gurav said.
A case has been registered under Section 75 (2) of the Juvenile Justice Act, along with stringent provisions of the POCSO Act. Gurav added, “We aim to file the chargesheet within 10 days.”
In another case, Tinsukia police secured a conviction within two months and 29 days of a separate rape case. The accused was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment following a swift investigation led by Investigating Officer Nipen Gogoi, who filed the chargesheet within seven days.
Under Superintendent Gurav’s leadership, Tinsukia police have doubled the conviction rate in the last 18 months, reaching over 18%.
