Kohima: The Rising People’s Party (RPP) has submitted a representation to the Nagaland Chief Minister, expressing strong opposition to the recent recommendations regarding the nomination of individuals from the Muslim and Gorkha communities to the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC).
The recommendations were reportedly made by legislators Zhaleo Rio and Tovihoto Ayemi.
“The Naga student community has stridently come out against the proposed nomination citing valid reasons and we stand in solidarity with their concerns. On this issue, apart from the indigenous Naga tribes there are other non-Naga indigenous tribes in the state such as Kukis, Garos, and Kacharis, and any nomination should be from within the indigenous tribal community of the state,” it said.
In addition to opposing the DMC nominations, the RPP also urged the government to strongly desist from appointing non-Nagas as the replacement GB of New Market who had passed away. “There is no necessity in playing appeasement politics when the future of the indigenous tribals are at stake due to unchecked mass immigration of aliens,” he said.
The party said that the state government is urged to issue a fresh notification overriding the previous notification No. GAB-1/COM/82/2004 dated 9th April 2010, relating to the appointment of GBs which is vague and full of loopholes.
It suggested that the fresh notification should incorporate the line “A person seeking appointment to the post of GB must be an indigenous tribal citizen of the state.”
The party cited that in the previous notification, the words “Indigenous” and “Tribal” were missing which allowed unscrupulous officers to even appoint people of doubtful ancestry. For the non-Naga non-tribal Indigenous inhabitants’ nomenclatures such as “Representatives”, and on, it suggested, may be used instead of GB in the urban areas.

“These are some of the points on which there is overwhelming consensus and as such calling for a consultative meeting with the stake holders is not at all required,” it said.
The representation was signed by RPP vice president Vitho Zao and general secretary Amai Chingkhu.
