Nagaon hosts workshop on Seasonal Livelihood Mapping

A team of 10 researchers from Aaranyak took part in a district-level workshop on ‘Seasonal Livelihood Mapping and Community-based Participatory Planning’ at the Zila Parishad conference hall in Nagaon District on August 9. The workshop was jointly organised by the United Nations-World Food Programme (UN-WFP) and the Department of Agriculture, Government of Assam, with support from the Nagaon District Administration. This event was part of the project titled ‘Enhancing Climate Adaptation of Vulnerable Communities through Nature-based Solutions and Gender-transformative Approaches in Assam, India’ (ENACT-Assam), currently being implemented by the WFP and the Agriculture Department, Government of Assam.

Aaranyak, a leading environmental NGO in India, has been selected as the local agency to conduct preliminary field studies for this project in selected villages across Nagaon District. The targeted villages fall within the Kathiatoli, Pakhimoria, and Roha development blocks. The Aaranyak team, led by Dr. Partha Jyoti Das, Head of the Water, Climate, and Hazard Division, included Hemanta Phukon, Kakali Sarma, Dharani Saikia, Ranjita Chetry, Arundhati Das, Pulin Saikia, Swagot Buragohain, Mriganka Shekhar Baruah, and Disha Haloi.

The ENACT-Assam project aims to reduce disaster risk, enhance preparedness, promote climate adaptation, and strengthen climate resilience within the agriculture sector of Assam, particularly among vulnerable livelihood groups such as farmers, fishers, livestock raisers, and other vocational groups facing climatic, socioeconomic, environmental, or disaster-related risks.

The project has been designed to achieve three key outcomes: (i) Improved capacities for climate adaptation at the community level, (ii) Promotion of sustainable farming practices, gender-transformative, and diversified rural livelihoods, and (iii) Promotion of resilient food systems and the creation of institutional mechanisms.

The Aaranyak team will undertake Seasonal Livelihood Mapping (SLM) and Community-based Participatory Planning (CBPP) exercises in seventeen villages within Nagaon District. These methodologies aim to promote a bottom-up planning approach at the community level, ensuring the active participation of communities in development planning by prioritising their views and choices.

Narendra Kr. Shah, District Commissioner, and Gunajeet Kashyap, District Development Commissioner, Nagaon, attended the workshop as invited guests. They interacted with participants on various issues related to agriculture, climate change, and food security in the district, and informed the audience about the different schemes being implemented in the rural livelihood sector.
