In a significant crackdown on dog trafficking, the police have rescued at least 47 dogs since May 29. Acting on specific inputs, the authorities successfully recovered 22 dogs on Wednesday, May 29, followed by another 25 dogs on Friday, May 31.
According to police sources, five individuals suspected of involvement in the alleged dog trafficking operation were arrested during the rescue mission. In addition, three vehicles used for the illegal transportation of the dogs were seized by the police.
The issue of dog trafficking in Assam has been a growing concern, with several organisations and gangs allegedly stealing dogs and smuggling them into other states for consumption. The rescued dogs were reportedly being transported to certain areas of Nagaland, with some reports indicating that Mizoram is also a destination for these smuggled animals.

Furthermore, sources have revealed that the illegal trade extends beyond Indian states, with numerous incidents reported of dogs being smuggled from India into neighbouring countries.
The police have stated that investigations into the case are ongoing, as they continue their efforts to dismantle the network behind this illicit trade.
