Guwahati: As part of Indian Railways’ policy to protect wildlife species, including rare and endangered ones, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is set to install canopy bridges along railway lines in the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in Jorhat, Assam, to protect Hollock Gibbons.
In regions where railway lines pass through forest areas or sanctuaries, necessary precautions are implemented to prevent accidents. A significant measure is being undertaken in the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Jorhat district, home to the rare Hollock Gibbon, a highly arboreal species.
In consultation with the Assam State Forest Department, the Wildlife Institute of India, and other stakeholders, N.F. Railway has decided to install Canopy Bridges within the sanctuary. These bridges will facilitate the safe movement of arboreal species across the railway tracks that bifurcate the sanctuary.
The Assam State Forest Department has already submitted the design and cost estimate for the installation of the Canopy Bridges. The design, prepared by the Wildlife Institute of India in consultation with N.F. Railway, has been approved. In February 2024, N.F. Railway deposited the estimated amount for the installation to be carried out by the Assam Forest Department.
The Canopy Bridges will be installed at several identified points to ensure easy access for the gibbons and other arboreal species. The ends and knots of the bridges will be secured using high-grade fastening materials and techniques. Additionally, safety nets will be installed below the main twin-rope bridges to catch any animals that might accidentally fall.
