A research-driven biodiversity conservation organisation, Aaranyak, has taken the initiative to safeguard the villagers living in the foothills of the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon district of Assam from wild animals.
The organisation has distributed torchlights to the villagers of five villages, namely Kamarpur, Gorubandha, Nakara Habi, Noloni, and Burha Mayong, to help them see the wild animals in the area from a safe distance. The lights are expected to help the villagers in their interactions with the wild animals, which are mostly rhinos and buffaloes, and also ensure the safety of the villagers.
The initiative was initiated after holding an awareness meeting on human-wildlife negative interaction among the villagers living in the fringe areas of the wildlife habitat. The event was supported by the Zoo Berlin.

Range Officer of the wildlife sanctuary Nayan Jyoti Das and other forest staff deployed in the sanctuary, Senior Officer from Aaranyak Dr Deba Kumar Dutta, and officials Ujjal Bayan, Pranjal Deka, and K9 handler Rahul Das attended the program and distributed the torchlights. The program was a step towards ensuring the safety of both the villagers and the wild animals.
