Tezpur University to expand with six new departments

Tezpur: In a significant move to expand its academic offerings and promote interdisciplinary studies, Tezpur University (TU) is set to establish six new departments. The announcement was made by Vice Chancellor Prof Shambhu Nath Singh on April 5, 2024.

The new departments include Economics, Psychology, Political Science, Geography, Performing Arts, and Vocational Studies and Skill Development. These programs are expected to offer specialised curricula that will equip students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to excel in their respective fields.

“It has been observed that Tezpur University has primarily focused on science and engineering programs. To become a multidisciplinary university, TU needed departments that can offer programs in humanities and social sciences as well,” Prof Singh, who completed one year in office on April 4, said.

TU has received an additional 240 acres of land adjacent to its existing campus from the state government. Once allotted, the university plans to expand its campus to accommodate the new departments.

The university has also signed MoUs with the Bodoland Territorial Council and IIT-Guwahati to fulfil regional aspirations. The Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Chair is in the final stages of implementation, while the establishment of the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika chair is underway.

Reflecting on his first year in office, Prof Singh expressed gratitude to the entire TU community for their unwavering support and dedication. He expressed confidence that the university will continue to grow and flourish in the years to come.
