Guwahati: Bharat Chandra Narah, an MLA representing Nowboicha constituency in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, tendered his resignation from the Indian National Congress on Monday. His decision came just two days after the Congress party announced its candidate for the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat, sparking discontentment within the ranks.
According to a report by the Hindustan Times, Narah’s resignation stemmed from his disappointment over the Congress leadership’s choice of candidate for the Lakhimpur parliamentary constituency. Narah, who was hopeful of his wife Ranee Narah’s nomination, a former Union Minister, expressed dissatisfaction over the party’s decision to field Uday Shankar Hazarika instead.
This move follows Narah’s earlier resignation from the position of Chairman of Assam Congress’ media cell, tendered on Sunday. In his resignation letter to Assam Congress Chief Bhupen Kumar Borah, Narah cited his decision to step down from his role as Chairman of the Media Department, Assam PCC, effective immediately.
Ranee Narah, Bharat Chandra Narah’s wife, holds significant political clout herself, having served as a three-time Member of Parliament from the Lakhimpur constituency in Assam. Both Ranee Narah and Uday Shankar Hazarika had previously switched allegiance from the ruling BJP to join the Congress several months ago, positioning themselves as strong contenders for the Lakhimpur constituency seat.
With Ranee Narah’s omission from the Congress’ candidate list, the electoral battleground for the Lakhimpur seat is set to witness a face-off between Uday Shankar Hazarika and BJP candidate Pradan Baruah, who is vying for his third consecutive term.
