Guwahati: A team from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, sprung into action on Tuesday and apprehended an employee of the Silchar Development Authority office in connection with a bribery case.
According to a complaint filed with the directorate, Abhijit Kar, a field surveyor at the Silchar Development Authority office in Cachar district, allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 1,00,000 from a complainant.
The bribe was purportedly sought in exchange for issuing a no-objection certificate (NOC) to the complainant for the regularization of a house construction.
The directorate swiftly acted upon the complaint, setting up a trap at the Silchar Development Authority office. Kar was caught red-handed within the premises after accepting Rs 15,000, a portion of the demanded bribe, from the complainant.
The money was seized in the presence of independent witnesses, as confirmed by a statement issued by the Superintendent of Police, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam.
Further investigation revealed that during a body search of Kar, an additional amount of Rs 38,500 was recovered from him and duly confiscated. Moreover, a search conducted at Kar’s residence in Silchar town led to the seizure of unaccounted cash worth Rs 12,60,890.
Subsequently, a case was registered at the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) police station under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018).
The superintendent of the department emphasized that with ample evidence against the accused public servant, Kar was arrested in connection with the case. Legal proceedings are now underway to address the matter appropriately.
