The state-of-the-art facilities of the New Karimganj railway station are set to get a facelift under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). The railway station will receive a total amount of Rs 30 crore in the interim budget 2024-25.
The ABSS aims to improve the railway infrastructure of Northeast and Assam. Under this scheme, 91 stations of NFR’s jurisdiction are being redeveloped. The New Karimganj railway station is one of the selected stations for redevelopment.
The existing building of the New Karimganj railway station will be extended with improved facade. Other modern facilities like waiting halls with the latest amenities, new lighting in the circulating area, lift/escalator and FOB and Cafeteria facilities are also to be installed. A new toilet block will also be built separately for male and female passengers. Improved parking facilities with beautification of circulating area are also planned.
All the platforms will be provided with shelter and resurfaced with marble stone, tiles, etc. for easy movement of passengers. The entry-exit path will also be developed for improved accessibility of passengers. The foundation work for the new station building has already started. Other works like the installation of the Coach Guidance System, Modern Train Information Display System, Better Road and dividers, and the provision of easy access water booths for Divyangjan are also in progress.

The government expects that the upgrading of the railway station will create new avenues for employment and business opportunities in the Northeast. The upgraded station will also attract more tourists to the area.
