Assam: Congress accuses state govt. of violating MCC

Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has put forward a tentative list of candidates for all 14 parliamentary constituencies in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The decision follows a screening committee meeting held at a party office in Delhi, as reported by India Today NE.

The fate of the current Congress MPs and aspiring candidates rests on the deliberations of the screening committee, which includes APCC President Bhupen Borah, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Debabrata Saikia, AICC In-Charge of Assam Jitendra Singh, the chairman of the screening committee, and two AICC secretaries.

A highly placed source revealed to India Today NE that the consent of the working presidents – Rana Goswami, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha – has been considered before the announcement of the tickets, although they are not part of the screening team.

Following a thorough discussion, only two constituencies have been confirmed so far. For the Tezpur constituency, the Congress is likely to field Abhijit Hazarika, a former legislator, while Bornali Phukon’s name has also been suggested. However, the Congress remains in a dilemma for the Guwahati constituency, contemplating an alliance with AAP and considering Mira Borthakur Goswami if no alliance is formed.

On February 8, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had already announced its candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha Elections from three seats in Assam, including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Tezpur.

The Congress is urging Rakibul Hussain to contest from the Dhubri constituency, while Abdul Khaleque also eyes the same seat, leading to claims of the state Congress trying to sideline Abdul Khaleque. For the Silchar constituency, the Congress is considering placing a female candidate, Naiwritaa Joy Shukla. Gaurav Gogoi is the contender for the Jorhat constituency, but the party is yet to decide on the fate of sitting Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi and Gaurav Gogoi for the Nagaon constituency.

For the Karimganj constituency, the Congress is leaning towards Roselina Tirkey. However, the decision is pending for the North Lakhimpur constituency. In the case of the Karmiganj constituency, the party has suggested four names: Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury, Ahad Talukdar, Zubair Anam, and Aminur Rashid Choudhury.
